Amar Singh Chamkila is a captivating biographical film that chronicles the life of the legendary Punjabi singer, Amar Singh Chamkila. The movie takes us on a nostalgic journey through his rise to fame, musical genius and impact on Punjabi music.
A good biopic about an artist who was a victim of cancelled culture in the worst way. Imtiaz Ali tells the story of Amar Singh Chamkila. The musician became the highest selling artist of Punjab by writing and performing vulgar songs. He was not the only one writing such songs, nor were his songs the most distasteful in the industry. But he was the one who gained the most popularity. So, had to suffer the consequences.

In telling this biography, Ali doesn’t take his side by justifying his lyrics. He doesn’t make a hero out of Amar Singh Chamkila. He just presents him as he was. An artist who created music according to the audience’s taste. The ordinary person who did not have the luxury to think about rights and wrongs. He just produced what he saw and heard around him.
The screenplay of Amar Singh Chamkila is impeccable. Cast is the biggest positive. All the characters seem real ones. Superb music score is carefully threaded and elevates their story each time. The narrative doesn’t aim to present a hero, but is a commentary on the dichotomous nature of our society. I like how carefully Imtiaz Ali presents the feminine perspective. The Punjabi cultural and societal depiction is also accurately to the point.
Imtiaz Ali was amazing in directing. The way the story of Amar Singh Chamkila is told to the audience is intriguing. You never feel bore in this movie. Music of AR Rehman is another plus point to the film.

Diljit Dosanjh’s portrayal of Chamkila is nothing short of mesmerising. He effortlessly embodies the complexities of the enigmatic artist, Amar Singh. While Parineeti Chopra delivers a compelling performance in her supporting role. Anjum Batra, Apinderdeep Singh, Nisha Bano, Vipin Katyal and Anurag Arora supporting cast unit put their honest efforts into making it a wholesome experience.
Amar Singh Chamkila is not just a biopic, it’s a meditation on truth, memory and legacy. It encourages audiences to reevaluate judgments and reconsider the stories they tell, recognising that the truth is often more nuanced and elusive than it appears at first glance.
Overall Amar Singh Chamkila is a must-watch for those who seek an authentic glimpse into the life of a legendary artist.
