Barzakh (Review) – Not Typical But A Haunting Drama

First Episode of Barzakh, featuring Fawad Khan, Sanam Saeed, Salman Shahid, Khushhal Khan and Fawad M Khan released on Zee Zindagi, YouTube Channel and Zee5.

In Islam, Barzakh means a barrier which separates the living from those in the afterlife. A place where the souls rest until the day of judgment.

The Barzakh shooting took place in the Hunza Valley of Pakistan. It is described as the Land of Nowhere (literally). A 76-year-old Jafar Khanzada (Salman Shahid) decides to marry for the third and last time to the love of his life. She’s a woman who has been dead for years. It gets interesting as JK asks his children came back to his house (Mehtab Mahal) to witness the once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon. His estranged children are Shehryar (Fawad Khan) and Saifullah (Fawad M Khan). Sheharzad (Sanam Saeed) looks after the mansion JK. Shot with utmost finesse, it doesn’t appeared a typical Pakistani drama rather an international project.

What will keep you hooked is the story steadily opens a Pandora box of secrets. Sometimes spooky and sometimes creepy. The plot revolves around past and present. Life and afterlife, natural and supernatural, and this is where the beauty of Asim Abbasi’s direction lies.
The story of Barzakh doesn’t lie in a single element. It’s equally shared in the perfection of the cast choice, their performances, the storytelling style and character development while keeping a lot of things unrevealed. The direction and the set design are superb.

The production and scale of the Barzakh is as big as it can get. The background score blends well with the somber cinematography. Also, it looks beautiful to watch the snow-capped mountains, the vast greenlands and the sun shines brightly at high altitude.

Barzakh isn’t typical desi drama but a hauntingly beautiful show set in a fantasy world, where the ordinary meets the extraordinary. Can’t wait for the next Episodes.

You can watch new episodes of Barzakh every Tuesday and Friday on Zee Zindagi, YouTube Channel and Zee5.
