John Lewis Gaddis
Cold War is written about the post world wars and the standing of major players like Germany, US, UK and Russia. John Lewis tries to evaluate the conflict in the light of how and why. The conclusion is the war will never end. The war games might change but this human instinct to gain power over land, people, resources is never ending. It might bring a short term gain but there is a whole world of loss too.
The mad race for the acquisition of nuclear secrets, the fight for control over seas, the dark world of spies and aspionage . Stubborn politicians and soldiers dying on the battle fields painted the pages red. The big wars might end but they led the way for small fronts of Korea, Vietnam, Berlin, Afghanistan and many more. It kept the earth bleeding. Honestly there is no end in sight.
If you are a regular reader of war history, then you must noticed an interesting fact that US always manages to safe guard it’s interests. She keeps the war conveniently out of their homeland. Hence the economic downfall and human loss has been less for her during those major conflicts. Careful long term planning, political menuvering saved the day for US. Treaties like SALT the political power game. In the midst of it leaders of China and Germany trying to carve out something better for their nations.

Countries like Germany, Russia, China, Korea, Japan and even Vietnam built themselves up from practically ashes. Around the same time that we gained independence but look at where they stand now and where we headed. I feel while reading Cold War, leaders set up plans in motion that would help their nations long after they are gone. They could see this will not benefit them personally at that time. Meanwhile people ruling us have their own agendas as supreme, they gather and then leave.
The writing style of Cold War is very engaging and intriguing. The author has put much research into it with personal quotes of key players inserted here and there. I have found such books favouring US mostly but in this one I found balanced and objective narrative. I totally recommend it.
