Gone Girl is a 2014 American psychological thriller directed by David Fincher. Gillian Flynn wrote a novel in 2012 with the same name.

Starring of the Gone Girl includes Ben Affleck as Nick Dunne and Rosamund Pike as Amy Elliot Dunne. On their 5th wedding anniversary, Nick’s wife, Amy disappears out of nowhere. Hence, this shocking, intense and haunting journey begins. David Fincher and Gillian Flynn’s intelligent storytelling throughout this fantastic journey will keep you at the edge of your seat from start to end.

Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike do a phenomenal job in their roles as spouses. Not a line feels out of place. Both seem as they were born to play Nick and Amy Dunne. By the end of the film I felt so immersed in their story that I found it hard to believe Gone Girl was just a film.

Carrie Coon has a lively, relatable presence as Nick’s frustrated yet loyal twin sister, Margo, and provides some comic relief. As does Tyler Perry, who surprises by breaking away from his usual Madea shtick to deliver a straight-on, confident, coolly composed portrayal of a slick lawyer.

Writing duties are handled by Gillian Flynn, who also wrote the novel upon which the film is based. While I have not read Gone Girl, Flynn constructs a tight, concise, yet also deliciously mysterious tale. Some of her framing devices and artistic flourishes help elevate what could have otherwise been quite the routine film.

Director David Fincher continues to prove his status as one of the great directors working today with this film. As his previous works, he soaks this Gone Girl in his deliciously dark, twisted, sometimes nihilistic visual and storytelling sensibilities. It fantastically compliments and augments the uneasiness of the story, and the unsure relationship the audience has with the characters. The cinematography is also one of the film’s strongest assets and David Fincher certainly knows how to set up a shot. Actors are steady and smooth from scene to scene in order to give you a clear shot of the characters at hand. The score is also great and Trent Reznor. Once again, he showcases his musical talents for each scene.

In my opinion, “Gone Girl” is one of the best psychological thriller movies. It’s a stellar example of modern mystery and tightly-assembled character drama. The film will haunt you long after it ends.

My Rating: 4/5
