Monkey Man is Dev Patel’s debut directorial venture. It refers an anonymous young man who unleashes a campaign of vengeance against the corrupt leader. He murdered his mother and continue to systemically victimise the unprivileged and powerless.
Dev Patel plays the lead role himself in the Monkey Man. It portrays an underground street fighter just striving to make a living in the slums of India but with a burning desire for vengeance. As the film progresses, it slowly introduced to both the target(s) of his vengeance and the reasons of his inability by it.

Monkey Man is a good movie. Some points of this film are excellent, such as the action and acting. But then it contrasted in great mass by incredibly negative points like the plot and the writing. The plot is nonexistent. You do not immediately understand the goal and the story of kid. To understand the origins by hand makes the vision confusing and meaningless. The writing is horrendous, very confusing. You can clearly assess that the film aimed only at violence and adrenaline. Otherwise I would not be able to explain the choice of not creating a story behind it. The movie stylishly drags in telling a simple story towards the half runtime.
Dev Patel’s acting was just incredible. It really felt like he was actually feeling the emotion in every scene. It seems he actually broke down and rebuilding as a character. I was on the edge of my seat the whole way through. The supporting characters are weak, detracts from the overall impact of the Monkey Man.

Overall, Monkey Man is just one time watch. I wish there were some elements emphasised a bit more. I wish the plot was a bit engaging and the cinematography more professional. But, Patel’s debut is a fine one. I only think he can improve from here.
