If your laptop becomes wet with water, juice, tea, coffee or any type of liquid spills over it, you must take action promptly to prevent harm. Here are a few ways to save your gadget.
Turn off Immediately
Turn off your laptop right away to avoid any short circuits that could cause additional damages.
Unplugging
- Unplug all of cords, including the keyboard, mouse and monitor.
- Remove the battery, SD cards and any other replaceable parts.
Use a cloth or paper towel to wipe the outside to remove any extra liquid. Then, open your laptop’s hinge as wide as possible and hold it upside down to allow the liquid to drain out.
Dry using desiccants like Silica gel or uncooked rice.
Place the laptop in a sealed container or plastic bag with desiccants for 24-48 hours.
Use a wet vacuum or cloth, gently remove water from the keyboard, ports and vents.
Avoid Heat
Do not use a hairdryer, oven or microwave to dry your laptop because heat can damage components.
Expert Assistance
If your laptop has been submerged in water for an extended period of time or you are unsure about the occurrence, best way of action is seeking help from the expert repair or contact the manufacturer.
The Rice Trick
Fortunately, enclosing your laptop in a container with dry rice for 48 hours can reduce the likelihood of losing important data due to water damage.
- Fill a container or plastic bag with uncooked rice.
- Place the laptop on top of the rice, ensuring it is completely covered.
- Seal the container or bag and let it sit for 24 to 48 hours.
- The rice will absorb moisture and assist to dry off the it.
Note: The rice method is not flawless and may not work in all situations. It is critical to act immediately and follow the other steps to increase chances of preserving your laptop.
Remember even if you follow these instructions, there is still a chance of damage or data loss. Act swiftly and carefully to reduce the impact.
